Context is everything

“In bocca al lupo! ” is a little Italian phrase that I hear most days. It is the way that Italians wish each other good luck. Literally translated it means
“in the mouth of the wolf”
Now, to those raised outside of Italy being in the mouth of the wolf might not seem very lucky and we certainly wouldn’t wish that on anyone. No, we would be searching the number for animal control.
However, if you look back to the creation mythology of Rome you find Romulus and Remus, two babes in the wood, abandoned in the hills and found by wolves. These wolves did not eat them. They carried them home and fed them and nurtured them. You can guess which city the wolflings founded.
To an Italian being in the mouth of the wolf is an incredibly lucky thing.
Context matters
When you are reading ask yourself where the author is in his mental map. What is his history, belief, world view? You will open yourself up to colours in their work that would have passed you by.

Now, not all of us posess the skills of Homer. Some of us avoid poetry because we fear a wedgie from our journalistic self.
Do not fear the Poem.
Large uncomfortable truth in an itty bitty space.
I will tell you why. There is no better way to learn the music of a language than to look at its poetry.
Lyricists take note.

Pencil Tax

From the first of March 2013 the British Government will be instituting a new Pencil Tax as part of the new Green Deal scheme. The Tax will be implemented alongside other energy saving measures in a bid to maintain a healthy Ecosystem.
A spokesman for the initiative states
” we hope to prevent the destruction of our planets’s resources and any suggestion that we wish to control writers is seriously overblown. I think you will find our present predicament is the fault of previous administrations.”

How Boxing Can Make Us Better Writers–Lesson 3 STICK & MOVE

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

Are You Quick on Your Feet?

When I trained as a boxer, we did a lot of footwork. Dart in, hit, then get out of the way. Best way to win a fight? Simple. Don’t get punched. Or at least get punched as little as possible. When our opponent takes a swing? Don’t be there. The skill of sticking-and-moving requires endurance, strength and flexibility. Being a successful Digital Age Author requires the same.

Learn to Stick and Move

Get quick on your feet. Change, adapt, overcome. The lithe survive, especially now in the Digital Age. The big traditional publishers are suffering because their size doesn’t allow them to adapt to the rapid changes that come part-and-parcel with explosive technological advance.

Indies, in this sense, have an advantage. An author can change covers if one isn’t working. He or she can respond directly to what consumers want.
